Hello and Welcome to Sustainability in Fashion
A Newsletter dedicated to informing sustainability professionals on fashion and beauty
Hello and Welcome Guys, Gals and Non-Binary Pals!
I’m so excited to start this journey in sustainability together, but first a little bit about me.
I’m Madison, a Masters Candidate in Sustainability Management at Columbia University, and a sustainable fashion enthusiast and professional. I started my journey when I was 10 years old and discovered the cultural phenomenon that was Project Runway (the original with Tim Gunn, not the new version with Karly Kloss lol). Project Runway introduced me to the world of fashion, in however narrow a way, and I fell in love with the idea of being a designer. However, that dream was short lived as I attended a Fashion Design camp at Parsons when I was 12 and quickly discovered I do not have the creative chops to be a designer.
I then moved on to dreams of being a stylist, working at a magazine (which was probably inspired by The Devil Wears Prada and Nigel), but during my undergraduate degree I was introduced to a new and much more troubling aspect of the fashion industry, the environmental and social issues that run rampant in the business. From there I pivoted into a focus in sustainable business, particularly fashion that led me to where I am today, looking to start a career in sustainable fashion with knowledge of Life-Cycle Assessments, the Circular economy and sustainability metrics. I want to share my knowledge and create a space for other sustainability people to discuss and think about things happening in the industry.
Now onto the reason you are all here (all 10 of you … for now). I want to use this newsletter to compile all the news on sustainability with a focus on the fashion and beauty industries, but don’t think other things won’t pop up from time to time. I love writing and I want to share my thoughts and opinions in a way that provokes thought and conversation. I will be diving deep into company’s sustainability policies and programs and encouraging everyone reading to seek out this information and so much more to make informed choices when it comes to supporting “sustainable” brands. I also want to hear from you and feature your thoughts on what’s happening. So, reach out to me and let me know what you think, and don’t be surprised if you see some sustainability professionals sharing their thoughts in interviews in the future. I am so excited to start this journey and help other young sustainability professionals stay informed.
I hope you’ll subscribe and join me on this journey.
